Pouring Over: A Concrete Blog

Concrete Overlays - An Attractive And Affordable Way To Add Texture

A concrete overlay can be used to enhance existing concrete. Unlike traditional stamped concrete products that usually require a concrete structure to be installed in its entirety, only the top layer of concrete will be treated.

Indoors And Outdoors

A concrete overlay process can be conducted on horizontal, vertical, and slanted surfaces. A retaining wall that is weathered could look brand new, once a brick design or a unique pattern is added to the surface of the concrete. If a property owner would like to enhance some interior parts of their home, they may choose to have a design added to the concrete walls that comprise their living room or to the concrete floor that is within their recreational room or garage. A concrete resurfacing project like this is suitable for use in all climates.

Cost Savings

Having a new concrete driveway poured or another large concrete structure installed on land can be time-consuming and expensive. A contractor will need to gauge how thick the concrete will be and will need to conduct the stamping process before the concrete has cured. With an overlay project, the time to complete a project will be reduced. Additionally, not as much fresh concrete will be needed, which will cut down on the cost that a property owner will incur.

A concrete overlay will conceal any imperfections that are present in existing concrete. A contractor may patch and level out surfaces that have deteriorated, but will likely be able to cover up stains and small cracks. An overlay design can be uniform and cover all of the concrete that exists or can be targeted and used to enhance specific parts of the pavement.

Preparations

A contractor can add designs that contain deep or shallow crevices. Some overlay products consist of stamps that resemble brickwork, pavers, and other standard products. A cobblestone walkway can be recreated or a beautiful masonry pathway can be acquired, by choosing a stamp style that is similar to a specific construction material and design scheme that a property owner has in mind.

A contractor will need to clean concrete surfaces first. This will remove sediment and loose debris. Then, they will prepare a batch of concrete for the overlay. The overlay may be added to molds that are placed directly over an existing section of concrete. A stamping process will be conducted, which will replicate the design that a property owner has requested.

About Me

Pouring Over: A Concrete Blog

If you look at a big, concrete pad or a foundation, it might be hard to imagine that concrete as a liquid. And yet, the concrete was once a liquid — or more accurately, a slurry — that your concrete contractor poured into a form. The concrete them took several days to harden before your concrete contractor was able to finish it. They may have finished it by sanding it down to a smooth texture, or even by applying stain.
