Having A New Driveway Installed? Benefits Of Choosing Asphalt And How The Driveway Will Be Installed

If you are having a new driveway installed, you have many options when it comes to materials. One of these options is an asphalt driveway. Below are some benefits of choosing asphalt, as well as information on how your new driveway will be installed by a contractor.

Asphalt Benefits

Asphalt provides a smoother surface when compared to other materials, such as concrete. Having a rough driveway could cause damage to the tires on your cars over time. If someone falls on the driveway, they will become more injured if the surface is rough.

Asphalt is a durable material so your driveway will last a long time. This is because asphalt is flexible so it will not become damaged even if heavy loads drive on your driveway. You will not have to worry about cracks as often as you would with concrete. This saves you a lot of time and saves you money on repairs.

Asphalt increases the aesthetics of your home. A smooth driveway surface that is completely even looks nice and increases your curb appeal. This is especially true if you have asphalt installed in other areas, such as for a pathway in your yard that connects to the driveway.

How an Asphalt Driveway Is Installed

The first thing the contractor will do is remove the existing driveway if there is one. If so, heavy equipment is used to remove and clear the debris away. Once the old driveway and all debris is removed, the soil surface is then prepared. The contractor will ensure there is a slight slope so water drains away from the asphalt.

The subbase is then installed, which is an important part of the process. This is because the base is what provides a stable surface for the asphalt. The subbase is also a barrier to frost that protects your driveway from freeze and thaw damage during the winter months. Finely crushed rocks are often used as the subbase.

The next step in this process is adding support structures, which are also known as binders. The asphalt is then poured to create your new driveway. It will take a few days for the asphalt to completely dry before you can start using your new driveway. How long this takes also depends on the weather, as it will dry faster if the weather is hot and sunny.

The asphalt contractor will tell you much more about how your new driveway will be installed.

Pouring Over: A Concrete Blog

If you look at a big, concrete pad or a foundation, it might be hard to imagine that concrete as a liquid. And yet, the concrete was once a liquid — or more accurately, a slurry — that your concrete contractor poured into a form. The concrete them took several days to harden before your concrete contractor was able to finish it. They may have finished it by sanding it down to a smooth texture, or even by applying stain.
