Pouring Over: A Concrete Blog

Use A Polymer Overlay To Restore Concrete

Deicing agents, chemical cleansers, and tools could weaken concrete and cause hardscaped surfaces to chip. A polymer overlay will seal and protect concrete that is located indoors or outdoors.

A Polymer Product's Properties

A polymer product can be used to replicate the color, texture, and composition of a concrete product. A concrete contractor may use a polymer overlay in place of tearing out an existing concrete slab and pouring fresh concrete into a mold. A polymer overlay is a cheaper alternative to a complete overhaul of an existing concrete surface.

Some instances in which a polymer product may be a suitable addition to a piece of property include when a concrete patio or deck has faded and contains worn spots that lack texture and when an indoor concrete floor has small grooves in its surface and lacks adequate traction.

A polymer overlay installation will require a minimal amount of downtime. A polymer product will be matched to an existing concrete surface. Then, it will be applied. The finishing technique may include using a concrete press to mimic the pattern that was originally displayed across a concrete surface.

A Specialist's Inspection And Other Targeted Services

A specialist is a concrete contractor who has received formal training to assess, clean, and preserve existing concrete. Before a concrete surface will be deemed suitable for the addition of a polymer overlay, a specialist will need to determine if an existing concrete slab is structurally sound. This will include assessing the integrity of a concrete slab and determining that the concrete does not contain any deep cracks within it.

Concrete that is slightly dirty or worn may be salvageable. A contractor may use pressurized cleaning tools and concrete patches during the cleaning and repairing processes. After the initial assessment and repair processes have been completed, a specialist will prepare a polymer. If an original section of concrete was dyed a specific shade, a contractor will use a color matching technique to prepare the polymer overlay.

The contractor will apply the polymer overlay in thin, even coats. They will advise a client about how long it will take for the polymer product to cure. Once enough time has elapsed, a concrete surface can be used. Indoor concrete flooring may normally require the use of hand trucks, forklifts, and other weighted equipment. A polymer overlay will adequately handle the weight loads that an original concrete slab was able to handle.

About Me

Pouring Over: A Concrete Blog

If you look at a big, concrete pad or a foundation, it might be hard to imagine that concrete as a liquid. And yet, the concrete was once a liquid — or more accurately, a slurry — that your concrete contractor poured into a form. The concrete them took several days to harden before your concrete contractor was able to finish it. They may have finished it by sanding it down to a smooth texture, or even by applying stain.
