Why Refinish Your Garage Floor With Polished Concrete?

If your old concrete garage floor is looking dull and dirty, then you might be thinking about how to restore the surface. While you can dig up the floor and put down new concrete, this is an extreme step to take. A full refit can be a time-consuming, messy, and expensive job.

However, if your floor is basically sound, then you can add a new polished concrete coating to it. What are the benefits of doing this?

Add an Attractive Luster

If the current concrete on your garage floor is plain and old, then it probably doesn't look that good. The surface might contain engrained stains, patches of oil, and dirt that you can't clean off. The floor might look rough and worn. Even if you deep clean the floor, it's never going to look like new again.

If you add a polished concrete coating to the floor, then you add an instant luster to the surface. You can choose from different coating styles and colors so you really can make a design statement. Once the coating is down, your floor will look better than it ever did.

Cover Hard-to-Remove Stains

Your garage floor has probably had to deal with a lot over the years. If it has some oil and grease stains, tire marks, and dirt that you can't completely remove, then you might think that a new floor is the only way to get a clean surface again.

While a layer of polished concrete won't remove these stains and marks, it can hide them from view or make them look less visible. For example, you can choose a coating color that will cover these problems. Or, you can use a multi-toned coating, such as an aggregate mix, that makes existing stains look less obvious.

Restore Protection

Regular concrete is porous. It will absorb some substances. When this happens, the concrete stains internally. These internal stains are permanent unless you remove some of the top layers of concrete to get at them.

If you lay a polished concrete coating on your garage floor, then you add a useful layer of protection. If your coating contains a resin layer, then the resin creates a barrier against internal staining. Your floor will have more protection, and its smooth new surface will be easier to clean.

About Me

Pouring Over: A Concrete Blog

If you look at a big, concrete pad or a foundation, it might be hard to imagine that concrete as a liquid. And yet, the concrete was once a liquid — or more accurately, a slurry — that your concrete contractor poured into a form. The concrete them took several days to harden before your concrete contractor was able to finish it. They may have finished it by sanding it down to a smooth texture, or even by applying stain.
